1911
Main Street, Auchindoir
Hugh Dey, 32, no occupation given
Elizabeth, , wife, 28 (married 4 years, 4 children all iving)
Elizabeth Jane, 4
Hugh, 3
William M, 1
John CooK, 2 months

All b. Auchindoir

So it looks as if the Hugh b. 1879 married Elizabeth McLean/Rennie/Milne

Are you sure that this is they?  Could they be the older Hugh and Jane?

I'm thinking this might be the family

1901
Currack, Auchindoir
Hugh Dey, 63, crofter/freestone quarryman, b. Insch
Jane, 51, b. Auchindoir
John C, son, 11, b. -do-
Jane, daughter, 10, b. -do-

They could be circa those ages in the photo

Thank you, this may be the couple in the photo, but I think they would have been too elderly to take on the bringing up of a 3 year old in 1921.  I think that the Hugh Dey who
is a farm worker in the 1901 census being born 1879 is probably the man who brought him up.  I went on to Scotlands people and found the marriage of a Hugh Dey in 1906 in Auchindoir, but it is very odd because there are 3 entries which state Hugh Dey married Elizabeth Maggie McLean, Elizabeth Maggie Milne and Elizabeth Maggie Rennie.
Maybe Polly was a nickname, but why should this lady have 3 surnames.
Perhaps we will never know.
Thanks.

I did given you that information yesterday and the 1911 census info. (Reply #6 and 9)

I think purchasing the marriage certificate will give you the info about the surnames. The 3 entries all have the same reg no.  so it would only be 6 credits (£1.25)

I traced back to pre-marriage censuses and found that neither Jane nor Elizabeth were nurses.

Who told you who the couple on the photo are and is there anything on the back?

If they were country folk, they maybe could be post-WW1 but the names you give are wrong. The young Hugh married an Elizabeth and the older one married a Jane.

I think I am missing a couple of your messages, not sure why. You mention 1911 census.  I was given this photo by a lady whose father was brought up by Hugh Dey and his wife Polly, not sure why she mentions Polly. I will go back to her and ask a few more questions, but she is very fragile at present with this virus situation,
You have been very helpful and I do appreciate it.

THis was my list of marriages:

I've done a wide search for a marriage of Hugh Dey 1901 to 1920, Scotland

Five marriages came up - none to a Jane

1905, Margaret Lund Leith South
1906 Elizabeth Maggie McLean Auchindoir ditto with surnames Milne and Rennie
1906  Isabella Simpson, St Machar

and this is the 1911 census:

1911
Main Street, Auchindoir
Hugh Dey, 32, no occupation given
Elizabeth, , wife, 28 (married 4 years, 4 children all iving)
Elizabeth Jane, 4
Hugh, 3
William M, 1
John CooK, 2 months

All b. Auchindoir

So it looks as if the Hugh b. 1879 married Elizabeth McLean/Rennie/Milne

Maybe the lady got confused about the names but why would she mention a nurse?

Thanks you so much for all this info.  I think she and I may have thought the lady in the photo was a nurse as she had what looked like a nurses watch on her dress.
Hugh's wife Elizabeth seems to appear in the 1901 census at McLean, could it have been possible that she married twice before she married Hugh Dey?
Many thanks for your help.

I've just looked at the 1906 marriage entry . All the surnames can be explained by the fact that Elizabeth was illegitimate. It gives this info:

Elizabeth Maggie Rennie Milne, aged 23

Her reputed father was a John Rennie.

Her mother was Jane Milne, afterwards married to Duncan Mclean
