William Spurling died 8 Jan 1831, will proved 16 Feb 1831. He left everything including tools, stock in trade to son John. John had to maintain his sisters, Sophia, Judith (while she resided with him) and Maria (when she was out of employ) and also his brother Harvey until he was 21. John Spurling (son) was sole executor. The witnesses were the same John and Henry Spurling as before.
On the probate section John (son) was described as an edge tool maker, so possibly had already been in business with his father. No mention of a wife in the will, so presume William was a widower.

(BTW Mary's name was "Mary Leppingwell GINN" at bp)

The Spurlings and Ginns seem to remain connected.
Harvey Spurling married in Colchester on 17 dec 1839 to Mary Cunnington Kettley. One of the witnesses was Elizabeth Leppingwell Ginn. Harvey was bac of Stanwell St - age 24 House painter, father William Spurling - edgetool maker (no mention that father was deceased by then).
He'd be about 16 when his father died.
As William was 62 in 1831, his birth would be about 1768/9, and in late 40s when Harvey was born.

Only one I see is Emma Ginn baptised Feb 1834 parents Charles and Ann.

It appears that Emma Ginn, dau of Charles & Ann, died 1835 Dedham

Also Edward & Ann's eldest child appears to be Elizabeth Leppingwell Ginn
 - Elizabeth marr Francis Stoker in Surry 1846. Her father noted as Edward, a Victualler
 - Elizabeth Leppingwell Stoker (wid) marr Charles Knight 1860 Southwark (father Edward,Victualler)

Backtracking a little:

Edward Ginn married firstly Sarah Cheese 27 Nov 1811 x Lic in Lexden Essex (both single)
 - Sarah Ginn, wife of Edward, was buried Lexden 05.03.1818 (abode Aldham)

Edward Ginn (wid) married Ann Spurling 11 July 1820 Bethnal Green. 2 witnesses were Mark & Susan'a Leppingwell.

There is another couple, Edward & Ann GINN, appearing on London 1841 & 1851 census (he's a Labourer). This Edward died on/after 1851. This couple are shown on most family trees as being parents of the Essex born children.

Thank you to all for your replies. There is a great amount of information provided.

The two occupations for Edward GINN are interesting...one a toll keeper and the other a publican/victualler

Emma GINN's marriage states Edward (dec'd) was a publican. Edward died in 1830 with his burial record stating he was a publican. Edward's will does not mention anything relevant to being a publican. All his children's baptisms state he is a toll keeper!

If Emma was born about 1832/33 then Edward was unlikely to be the father.

Do you think Emma was adopted (her name was given as Emma C. GINN on one of the census records)? Or is it possible she was not baptised?

Thanks again.

...Does anyone know if there are any records of 19th century publicans?
...Or records on Tollgate Keepers?

Doesn't help much, but found a death notice:

"On the 14th inst. died, Mr. Ginn, keeper of the toll-bar at Dedham."

Ipswich Journal, Saturday,  May 29, 1830

There are also a couple of references to "the Inn, Stratford Bridge" at Dedham around the 1830s, so possibly there was an Inn near or at the Toll gate. This is also the location of the Edge Tool Shop, ie "near the Toll Gate, Dedham" and "abutting on Stratford Bridge".

The Toll gate was also used as a starting point for hunts, mentioned a few times eg, "the Suffolk and Essex Subscription Hounds will meet ... at Dedham Tollgate ..."

Thanks Maddys52... It does help as it confirms that he was both a toll gate keeper and a publican. Edward was buried on 20th May 1830.

I don't think "toll-bar" means a pub, just a barrier to free flow of traffic = gate where a payment to be made. "Bars" in York are gates in the city walls.
