Then he stayed in Lexden until at least 1818 when his first wife died. By 1819 he is toll-keeper in Dedham. I wonder when the pub changed licensee.
Why change to a toll keeper in a different town? His signature shows that he had some education, but his parents both made mark on marriage record. The Spurlings sound like they might be of slightly higher social standing - especially having an Attorney in the family. Hope Edward got his will written for "mates rates".

It's a pity if Edward didn't have any children with Sarah, have seen no sign of any. Baptism records may have helped.

The name Leppingwell has come up!
John Munson m. Sarah Lepingwell in 1804, Marks Tey

Baptism at Marks Tey, 25 May 1806, of their son Mark Lepingwell

In 1851, Mark Leapingwell Munson was the landlord of the Sun Inn, Lexden!

Edward Ginn snr married Elizabeth Backer. I think Edward Ginn snr was son of another Edward Ginn (ems - even more senior) and Mary. There is a marriage of Edward Ginn and Mary Biscoe in Colchester Holy trinity 1749, and one of the Edward Ginns was a beneficiary in the will of a J Biscoe in 1790.  I was hoping to find a Lepinwell, but not yet.

The one who took over the Sun in between 1848 and 1851, may be a co-incidence - although not a common name. Quite a gap between Edward leaving and Mark becoming landlord. Maybe Lepinwell is connected to the Spurlings. Two children having it as a middle name must surely mean quite a close connection.

Found John Biscoe's (victualler's) will. No wife or children mentioned. He gives lots of small sums away to people who aren't Biscoes and are not identified by relationship. Edward is recorded as Edward Ginn of Colchester, victualler, so guess from dates it would be the middle Edward (Edward snr).

Wow! What can I say.....Thank you all for all your time and research.

After requesting a look-up for Emma GINN's baptism (which is still a mystery!), I have ended up with so much more information surrounding Edward GINN, who is not Emma's father, but is linked somehow through the widowed mother Ann.

Emma, I guess, can only be adopted or a GINN relation.

I think I need a little time this evening to piece together all the information provided. Thanks again.

I think Emma was the product of a relationship her mother had after a couple of years of widowhood. I doubt she  would adopt another child as a single mother with several small children of her own. Emma may not have been baptised. The Dedham parish records seem to have remarkably few base born child baptisms from 1831 to 1836, the period I had gone through. The only one I found was a couple where the putative father was named, a note was made that the mother's husband had been transported six years earlier and in the 1841 census the mother, putative father, baptisee and several of his siblings both older and younger were living as a nuclear family. Maybe the vicar disapproved of illegitimate children or would not record them or Dedham had an unusually high amount of pre-marital  celibacy.
