Just putting this family from 1861 (cannot read original on Ancestry - need scotlandspeople)
living in Kilbirnie as a great granddaughter
Margaret Steuart 76
Robert Barclay 52
Peter Barclay 22
William Barclay 16
John Barclay 10
Atton Barclay 8
Jone Barclay 24
Agness Bell 3
Margaret Bell  6 Mo
Elisabeth Leve 40
Mary Bean 23
Ann Bean 14

But if you think birth date is very likely 1865 it is not her.

Have you found Margaret on 1871 Scottish census?

Who did her mother marry?

Interesting. I think you've got it.

FindMyPast has Margaret Stewart; Robert, Peter, William, John, Allan and Jane Barclay; Agness and Margaret Bell; Elisabeth Love; Mary and Ann Rean.

SP index has Margaret Stewart; Robert, Peter, William, John, Allan and Jane, 26; Agness and Margaret Bell; Elisabeth Love; Mary and Ann Rean.

There is no birth of a matching Agnes Bell, but there is an Agnes Barclay, born 23 March 1858, mother Jane Barclay, no father named. Also a Margaret Barclay, born 12 September 1860, mother Jane Barclay, father not named.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Chempat and Forfarian, I would go with that Margaret you have found born in 1860 to Jane Barclay as being very likely the right entry.

Margaret called her first born daughter with John Murdoch Jane (Jeanie) B Murdoch. Another daughter was named Agnes Barclay Murdoch (for her sister?).

I can only see one potential paternity action involving a Jane Barclay here www.scottishindexes.com/courttranscript.aspx?courtid=7008029

Likely refers to this child www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYB2-NHL

If it is the correct Margaret and family, she is still at home in Scotland in 1881:

Jean Barclay 44
Maggie Barclay 20
Alexander Barclay 15
Jean Barclay 9

Address: Newton Street, Kilbirnie

Travel to NSW between 1881-5?

A brother of Jean Barclay, Allan b. 1853, married in Scotland and headed off to Australia in 1882. They arrived in Brisbane, Queensland on the 'Southesk'. No sign of Margaret with them.

One possibility for Margaret on the manifests to Australia:

Margt. Barklay arrived in Cooktown from Glasgow on 4 Sep 1882 on the 'Scotland'. Birth year c 1861.

So where do you think the Bell came into it?

I think you'd need to see the court papers to find that out.

Or possibly the Kirk Session records. See

The 1861 census lists three James Barclays in Bridge Street, Kilbirnie, one of whom is a 30-year-old farm labourer. He is still there in 1871.
