Joseph&Mary Pedley/ Eliza Goodall 1886/87
« on: Tuesday 23 August 05 13:41 BST (UK) »
At long last I am starting to unravel the mystery of my
Grandmothers parents, Joseph & Mary Pedley. (Relatives,
long dead, remembered their names because ot the religious connotations.  It was remembered that Emily Pedley ( my grandmother) became an orphan whilst still
young.  !n 1891 Emily is found living with her sister(thanks
Tati)  As she is shown with Joseph & Mary in 1881, Then I assumed that her parents had died between the census's.
I have narrowed their deaths to 2 dates which would appear to fit rhe circumstances.

I have just received the death certs. for the 2 likely candidates.

Mary pedley died 13-1-1886 aged 51y (wife of Joseph Pedley) witnessed by Fanny Barnett her Daughter, who Emily went to live with. This is O.K

The problem is Joseph. Why is he not the witness on the document? or didn't it matter?
The only Joseph I can find who died at the right time (obviously not for him ) & who seems to fit the bill, died 19-10-1887, aged 52y.  the witness is Eliza Pedley, widow of the deceased. (Kinsey street Congleton)

I can find a marriage between a Joseph Pedley & Eliza Goodall in1887.
The only Eliza Goodall that I can find would be 25y in 1887.

Did Joseph leave Mary before her death in 1886?
or was Fanny o.k as a witness.
Can anyone tell me the exact date of the marriage in 1887?.
( obviously it has to take place before 19-10-1887.)
Can anyone confirm the ages on the marriage and the witnesses?
These certs. cost £7-00 a time and I have been lucky up to just with selecting the correct people. I am not sure on this one. Before I order I would like a bit more confirmation.
Any other details that you think may help no matter what it is, would be most welcome.

Okay,
Regarding Joseph not getting a mention on his wife's death cert. My gut feeling is that the 'laying out the dead' and all the paperwork was left up to the womenfolk. (as was registering births).

Do the death addresses match?

As to his possible re-marriage, was there an Eliza Pedley, widow in 1891?

What qtr did the marriage you found take place in, supply ref?

Pauline

Hi Pauline,
I have other death certificates where the witness is a male.

No ,The death addresses are different.

I have no access to the 1891 census.

I only have the year of marriage,

Thanks for your reply,
Tomkin

So is it not quite possible that Joseph is still alive in 1891 somewhere?

Have you traced a Joseph Pedley (died 1887) to a someone else other than 'your' joseph in the 1881?
(which  is searchable on address and occupation)

Hi Pauline,
I am going on what I remember relatives telling me,that
Emily's mother & father died when she was young & that she went to live with her sister Fanny. ( she appears on the 1891 census)
I agree with your reasoning that, Joseph could have still been
alive & that the Joseph that I quote is a different man. He is the only Joseph that I could find in the BMD that fitted the memories. Unfortunately
everyone that may have known are now dead. Only by knowing year by year where Emily was living after her mothers death would we Know. And that is impossible.
In 1881 Joseph & Mary are living at 35 Wallworth bank, Congleton with Emily aged 3y
Many thanks,
Tomkin

Hi Tomkin

You seem to be right in your assumption that following the death of Mary Pedley, Joseph did marry one Eliza Goodall in 1887 who had had an illegitimate son James Goodall in 1881.

Following the death the same year of Joseph, she then married one Herbert Radford in 1889, I could not find them in 1891 but did find them in 1901.

RG13-3348-F127    Canal Street Congleton

Herbert Radford head 43 coal carrier Congleton
Eliza                   wife 40
Albert                 son 9
James Goodall step/son silk dresser

living next door is Eliza's brother Edward and his family also with him is his and Eliza's mother Harriet Goodall.

hope this helps, I know certificates are expensive but they are the only way to prove the theory.

bye for now
