He may have started off as a minister in the Church of Scotland then at the Disruption joined the Free Church of Scotland, there are also Free Presbyterians & United Presbyterians. First try the,  Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, of the Church of Scotland plus the Free Churches lists.

Carole, Thank you. Yes he did marry Agnes Graham in 1860, that's where I got his parents names, but I cant find them on the 1851 census or 1861.
Skoosh,  yes it makes sense that he could have been ordained into the CoS before 1847. I will check Fasti.
