Mary Winterbottom - Burial 1901
« on: Thursday 21 May 20 11:15 BST (UK) »
Hi. Looking for the burial for Mary Winterbottom age 33, wife of Sam Winterbottom of 24 Holly Terrace, Fartown.

Have looked on Ancestry without luck. Thought it might be on another site.

Her death is recorded on the Jul-Aug-Sep Registration Quarter for Huddersfield. But it will be a while before GRO will be processing orders.

Cheers Karen

Hi emeltom
Thank you for looking.

Not to be disrespectful to poor Mary, but I am more interested in finding out how old her twins were when she died. They were probably about 2 months.

Cheers Karen

Hi Karen,

Looking at records it looks like Mary possibly died in childbirth or shortly after. Mary's death was recorded July quarter 1901 and Robert and John Winterbottom's births were also registered in July 1901.
It looks like you will have to wait until you can get Mary's death certificate and the boys birth certificates to get their exact ages when Mary died.

Doesn't help much but John and Robert Winterbottom were baptised at St Andrew, Huddersfield on 27 August 1901. Parents Sam, an Engine Tenter, and Mary. Address 24 Holly Terrace.

Two things - it does not say that Mary is deceased, also it is possible that she was also buried at St Andrews church.

Hi emeltom

Have checked the burial registers at St Andrew's and everywhere else in Huddersfield.

According to the 1939 England census John and Robert were born 26 June 1901. If Mary was still alive when they were baptized, 27 August, then they were about 2 months old when she died.

Sam waited the customary 12 mourning period and remarried 20 September 1902 at Christ Church, Woodhouse. Checked the burial registers there also without luck.

I have 3 other deaths around that time in Huddersfield that I can't find burials for, 2 in 1904 and 1 in 1905.

I have to wonder where else I should be looking???

Thanks so much

Just a thought - Edgerton Road Cemetery  :-\

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Yes I have looked at Edgerton. I have 3 Winterbottom graves there, but no Mary  ???

I'm also looking for Hannah Challand (nee Winterbottom) d Mar 1904 Huddersfield death register, Fred Winterbottom d 13 Jun 1911 Close Hill, Huddersfield and Caleb Winterbottom d 17 Feb 1904 at Batley.

Have even looked as far away as Leeds. What am I doing wrong? Is it usual that some burials cannot be found?

There is also cremation to be considered.

These are the areas covered by the Huddersfield Registration District, so a number of locations to think about.

I can see Hannah, residing in Huddersfield in 1891, but can't seem to see her in 1901.
