old occupation
« on: Sunday 24 May 20 19:51 BST (UK) »
On the 1911 census for Gorebridge (Midlothian) one of my ancestors occupation was that of Carter at a 'meal mill' and a neighbour was listed as a clerk at meal mill.  I'm aware a Carter typically drove a light two-wheeled carriage for transporting goods but can someone please define 'meal'.  Was there a 'meal mill' in Gorebridge or if there was one in the surrounding area?

Thanks
anything and everything to do with the village of Brithdir, near New Tredegar in Gwent.

meal was a common term to describe ground grain (oatmeal, wheatmeal and so on).

1911 it would be the new steam-powered mills so a much bigger output than the old water-powered mills where the miller carried his own meal to market.
