Presbytery records for William Baird
« on: Monday 25 May 20 05:01 BST (UK) »
More on William Baird that I can't figure out ???

So tantalizing when you can make out a few words but not the whole :(

From another record it appears William Baird had married prior to his relationship with Betrix Merry. They reside in Muiravonside. He's the son of William Baird & Beatrie Merry. This record is from 1694.

I'd love a full transcription including the margin please and thanks.

In the margin:
William Baird disorder-
ly married

William Baird in Moravensyd being cited by the session there for disorder
by marriage compeired and produced the testificat of his marriage under the
curats hand who married him But the p(res)btry finding tht the witnesses men(tioned) in
the s(ai)d testifiacte doe not subscrybe the same appoynted the s(ai)d Wm Baird to pro
cure their subscriptions thereto & to produce the same ag(ain) the next p(res)btry day And
appoynted him him apud acta to be present at the tym for the end ?

Looks like the last word ends with 'ment'? Perhaps something equating to 'judgement'?
Looks as if there should be another piece for him the next session for the verdict.

The bit at the end reads "at yt [= that] tym for ye end @ment [ = abovementioned]".

In your other post the scandal is called "bigamy", but the record here suggests it is an irregular marriage rather. It would be interesting to see what the minutes of the kirk session said.

So he was married by an Episcopalian "Curate" pre the Glorious Revolution which restored the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Again=against. Nice work Goldie!  ;D

Yes, I wondered if that contraction meant more than just 'again' Skoosh. Thanks for that.

I thought it might be an @ sign GR2. I've come across it written in sasines - I think (if my memory serves right - it's a long time since I did them!), as @rent = annual rent?

Yes. It's common in @rent. It's basically the letter a with an abbreviation line across the top.

Thank you all so much - interesting that here it's an irregular marriage?

GR2, you mention:

It would be interesting to see what the minutes of the kirk session said.

How does one go about obtaining or viewing the kirk session record?

As Skoosh says, the minutes of the kirk session (if they survive for the period - the on-line catalogue of the National Records of Scotland will tell you) will eventually be widely available. The problem is probably how they can charge for them, as they are not indexed other than often having marginal headings like the ones above. At the moment lock-down has closed the archives where they can be seen.

Goldie earlier on suggested looking at the minutes of the next meeting of the presbytery to see if William Baird produced the required signatures.
