« on: Wednesday 27 May 20 09:51 BST (UK) »
Hi
Sarah PEACOCK was born in 1770 in Essex. She married John JORDAN on 14 February 1806 in Woodham Mortimer, Essex. They had nine children in 19 years. She died in April 1840 in Maldon, Essex, at the age of 70.She was a spinster of this parish and the marriage was witnessed by Sam Wiggins and Sarah Peacock .
Grateful if any member can provide any info the Sarah Peacocks' parentage was the Sarah Peacock witness her mother?
Regards

Essex Record Office Parish Registers
St Margaret, Woodham Mortimer.

I think her age was off at burial

Thomas Pennock and wife Sarah
Thomas bap 18 December 1779
*Sarah born 30 October 1783 bap 7 December (father's occupation Looker)
Mary born 21 September 1786 bap 5 November 1786 (father's occupation Labourer)

This is the closest I can find by name, the marriage entry does say Peacock, it depends on what was heard and written down.
Her age would then have 23 rather than 36 when married.
Thomas's wife Sarah must be from another village as they didn't marry in Woodham Mortimer.

So to answer your question it appears the witness is her mother.

Ages seem to be a little odd

If born 1770, she was 36 at marriage & had 9 children from age 37 to age 58 (maybe but unlikely)

Burial PR for Sarah Jordan in 1840 at Woodham Mortimer has her age as 40
GRO burial Maldon 1840 has Sarah Jordan age as 40

Neither Sarah Peacock or John Jordan signed the Marriage record in 1806. Both made their mark.
Interesting that both witnesses signed their names: Saml Wiggins? & Sarah Peacock

Have you found John Jordan on the 1841 census?

John and Sarah Jordan had 7 children at Woodham Mortimer between 1807-1820.
Jordan  is a very common name in the village.
There is another John who married an Elizabeth, plus George, Joseph, Samuel and James  all baptizing children in the same time period.

Please let us know which child of John and Sarah you are following.

Thanks amongd and Lady Di for your prompt and helpful replies,Amongd I think you have cracked it I found the age 36 and witnesses signing strange.Last week I advised my ex that there was an Essex Family Group on Facebook she mentioned perhaps they might help with her Peacock. My prelim investigation indicates that the Wiggins were the local squires. One of the children had the forename Campion I surmise that it may be her mother's maiden name.
Thanks again

Harriet married Stephen Gosling 8 January 1845 in Chelmsford.

The possible grandparents Thomas Pennock and Sarah did not marry in Woodham Walter either.

The possible grandparents Thomas Pennock and Sarah did not marry in Woodham Walter either.

Only possibility I can see is 28 April 1778, Mistley, Thomas Penwick and Sarah Manning
Good date, location not great, groom was of Dedham. FreeReg says the bride signed.
Thomas is Renwick on ancestry.

Have to say, not entirely convinced by the Pennocks.
Someone has suggested Sarah Peacock bap 24 June 1781, Little Baddow, parents John and Sarah.
That is a good location, and there is a marriage there, 23 Jan 1787, James Campion and Elizabeth Peacock.

The Sarah Jordan who died in 1840 age 40, and is buried at Woodham Mortimer, most likely was the wife of James, who was living there with his children in 1841 (last son John born 1837)
