If the record that Christine 53 has summarised is the one you have seen, then as far as he is concerned, that will be all there is to find.

The "army index" is for the years 1841, 51, 61 and 71 is a database put together from original records held at the National Archives including muster books and census data.  As far as I am aware, it exists only on Findmypast.

The original source for 1871 is WO 12/3772 and for 1861 is WO 12/3757.  Both of these are the muster (pay) books for 2nd Battalion East Devonshires and are not digitised.

Haven't had time  yet to work on the years of the different overseas service.

Just to confirm the record I quoted doesn't give a dob but states enlisted 19 Dec 1859 , aged 17.
Birthplace Curry Rivel. Regimental number 942 , 2BN 20th Foot.

Thanks for all the help!
Where would I find the Army Index, and more info on him ?
Cant go to our Library at the moment to look on Ancestry or Find my Past, so not sure where else to look.
Thanks again for all the info and help

If you are in the UK, check your library website. Many counties are allowing access to Ancestry and FindMyPast from home if you log into your library site with your library card. Its a temporary measure while the libraries are closed.

What Findmypast entitles the "Worldwid Army Index [date]" simply shows that (in his case) on the dates in question, a man of that name is listed in the muster book of 2nd Battalion 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot and it says where the battalion was.  It identifies the original source (as I cited).  It has no further information than that and nor has the muster book itself.
Its value is of course adding to the clues about a man's service.

In short, by not seeing it you aren't missing anything!

Loose end.  As far as I can easily tell, the overseas service was one long tour starting in mid 1863 when the 2nd Battalion went to India and all or parts of it on to China and Japan, then to S Africa end 1867 which included a side trip to Mauritius and back home (which includes Ireland) early 1872.

Thank you all again for all of that info, It always frustated me why I could never find him on the census after 1851, so at least I now know why and where he was etc.  Mind you now I cant find him on any of the later census either or a death or marriage for him still !  How do some people just manage to disappear ?
Thanks for all the help, will have a look at my library to see if I can use Ancestry !
