Youngtug - my mistake. I copied the wrong date. The Cricklade Museum also has the date of the marriage of Mary Cuss as 21 Dec 1807. So the contradiction remains.

Capetown - thanks for your efforts. I downloaded his will sometime ago. It acknowledges Mary as his natural daughter and left her the majority of his estate. He names her husband Robert JORDAN as his executor. The estate was to pass upon Mary's death to her son, James Byrt JORDAN who was born in 1811. The will unfortunately does not clarify whether Mary CUSS and Mary DOWDESWELL are the same person.

Capetown - I am also wondering whether we are distantly related. Martha CUSS was my 4xGGM. Her daughter Dinah CUSS was my 3xGGM. She married William BALLENGER on 15 Sep 1807 in Cricklade. William Ballenger's father was John BALLENGER and his mother Elizabeth HEWER, better known as Betty HEWER. Lots of names in common there. Any opinion?

Final thought I am still not sure whether Mary CUSS and Mary DOWDESWELL are the same person.

On the marriage record there is a witness of the name John Byrt, May not mean anything.
Also the Robert Jordan who married Frizwith Collier in 1818 was born in 1794, so it is not him that married Mary, must be another Robert Jordan.

I do think we are distantly related.  The Villages in question were/are are so small and close together.

Might be off interest; On the Parish Register, Mary, daughter of Martha Cuss, bap; 18-July-1790 there is something else written at the end of the line which I cannot make out.
Also a few lines down; John Tanner, son of Ann Tanner [pencilled in ; Byrt ]. bap; 1-Sep-179
