Martha Gibbs - bapt. abt 1775 Berks
« on: Thursday 04 June 20 11:05 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I have a quandary and would like some help please.

I have an Emy (Amy)  Buttler b.1798 Beedon, Berks (d/o James Butler & Martha Gibbs) who married Henry Broad 1819 in Milton, Berks.

My problem is that I cannot find the bapt.of Martha Gibbs (she is bur. 1825 aged 49  and also James Butler is bur. 1823 both in Milton)  so neither appear in the census records.

However today in looking further at the Beedon records,
I found;
18-3-1798 Martha Gibbs (b.9-3) (d/o Wm. & Mary) and
      "          Emy Buttler (b.6.2) (d/o James & Martha)
both same day - a coincidence?

and further in Hampstead Norreys I found this marriage;
11-1-1798 William Gibbs, of Beedon to Mary Broughton (By Licence).

Could the Martha bapt. in 1798 be the missing person (ie. a late baptism) or is she the d/o William Gibbs and his wife Mary as stated?

Perhaps I'm trying to read into this too much.

Anyone with views or who can find Martha, please help.

Alan

My money is on it being William & Mary's Martha, as the HN marriage notes that William is from Beedon.

I think you'll just have to be patient and keep looking for your Martha's baptism, there are still a lot of records not yet readily available.

The other slight possibility is that she was a widow when she married James.  She was only about 21, but not impossible, so you could look for a Martha marrying a Gibbs.  Just in case.

Martha Gibbs (Buttler) could the be sister of the William Gibbs who married in HN, then two baptisees could be first cousins and their parents thought it would be good to have them baptised at the same time as they were born quite close together. Joint christening party does save a bit on expense.

If Martha Gibbs (snr) baptism is elusive have you found that of William Gibbs?

Hi LizzieL,

Many thanks for your help.

I haven't got any further with this request, but tonight I did find a bapt.  for a William Gibbs in Beedon bapt. 24-6-1770.
This could the William who married Martha in 1798 in HN. Your suggestion she being the brother of Wm. could be right with a possible birth year of 1775 but still nothing found.

William Gibbs mother is Amy. But I can only see sisters Ann and Jane for him - possibly Amelia - but it says her mother Amelia. Could be that Amy is abbreviation for Amelia. Father's name is John in all cases
