Registration District Derby Union
« on: Friday 05 June 20 08:14 BST (UK) »
Hi
From GRO I have a birth in 1853 in the Derby Union registration district.  Subsequent births are registered in the Derby registration district.  Does anyone know the difference between the two please?

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I've looked there, but couldn't see anything about Derby Union?

The GRO Online Index only has one entry for Derby in the list of registration districts and the UKBMD page (https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/derby.html) makes no mention of any difference. I would guess, then, that the word Union is just the terminology the registrar at the time used.

Oh right, thank you.  I am clutching at straws, but hoped it would help to pinpoint location!

When Registration Districts were first formed, in 1837, they were based on the existing Poor Law Unions.

Many Registration Districts kept the word "Union" in their titles; some for many years.

So, the Registration Districts of Derby Union and Derby were one and the same ;D

According to Durham Record Office,
http://www.durhamrecordoffice.org.uk/media/16748/Births-Marriages-and-Deaths-Civil-Registration-a-brief-guide/pdf/UserGuide01CivilRegistration.pdf

For the purposes of civil registration, the country was divided into registration districts, each covering the same area as one or more poor law unions; the unions themselves, created in 1834, were each made up of a number of parishes, chapelries or townships, grouped together for the relief of the poor.

So the Derby Union and Derby registration districts were one and the same, maybe Derby Union District was sometimes used on certs and sometimes it was just Derby - less writing for the Registrar :-)  Potentially some registrars may have swapped between one and another depending on how busy they were so I'd doubt you'd be able to narrow it down to a specific sub district.

What was the name? Perhaps there is a baptism somewhere online that would help to narrow down 'where' within the district the birth took place.

What does it say on the Birth Certificate?

That should include the District name, the Sub-District name, and maybe a location or address.

The Poor Law Unions formed the Registration Districts, which were also the basis of the enumeration districts for the censuses, and which sometimes crossed county boundaries.

The setting up of Registration Districts is covered in Section VII of the 1836 Act which you can see at  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0mvp/
