Hi all,
I am currently researching the ancestors of my great-grandmother, born Edith Jane Robinson in Redhill in 1910 and known throughout her life as Ginny. She married my great-grandfather George Albert Adams in Redhill in 1932, had a son (my late grandfather) and died in Redhill in 1973. I am quite new to researching my family history and would be very grateful for any further advice or information.
The marriage certificate of Edith Jane Robinson and George Albert Adams lists her father as George Henry Robinson, a 'boot repairer'. I have found a George H Robinson who died in early 1929 in Reigate at the age of 48 (suggesting a birth year of c.1881), and I think this may be him, but other than this I know nothing about him.
Edith's mother's was called Jane and married again in late 1929 in Reigate to George Constable. According to Jane's death certificate, she was 65 at the time of her death on 11 Nov 1953, suggesting a birth year of c.1888. Her maiden surname is listed as Robinson, but I would think her birth surname was something else, as Robinson was the name of her first husband.
If I could find a record of George and Jane's marriage (likely approx. 1906/1907) then I would hopefully have more clues to their ancestry.
George and Jane's first daughter Ellen Eliza Robinson (known as Bridget) was born on 16 Aug 1908 and they are listed as living at 21 Grove Road, Redhill at the time of her baptism. Edith Jane Robinson (Ginny) was born on 14 Nov 1910. The 1911 census has a Mr & Mrs Robinson, no first names unfortunately, born c.1881 and c.1888 respectively, at 12 Grove Road, Redhill, with their two daughters Nellie, born c.1908 and Jane, born c.1910. I wonder if this could be them.
As far as I know, George and Jane Robinson had five daughters: Bridget, Ginny, Lil, Win and Joan. The youngest daughter Joan is said to have been disowned after becoming pregnant by an American or Canadian soldier and giving birth to a son, this is something else I would like to find out about if possible but have not started to look into in any depth.
There is also a story in my family that the either the Robinson and/or Adams family may have had Traveller roots. I am wondering if this could be impacting on the apparent lack of records I am faced with for the Robinson family.
Many thanks in advance,
Jacob
