His mother Anna was born Anna Sabol, according to his death registration details.

Thank you - I'm not sure if she made it to the USA as I think his father re-married

Ann Sabol states she was born Penn. in the 1940 census. C. 1900.
Andrew Sunda   Head   Male   45   Austria
Anna Sunda   Wife   Female   40   Pennsylvania
Mike Sunda   Son   Male   21   Austria
Mary Sunda   Daughter   Female   17   Austria

There's an Annie Sabol in Penn. in the 1910 census aged 8.
It they are one in the same a 2nd. marriage looks likely.

There’s a Michael Sunda 28 April 1918 in Czechoslovakian died 4 July 2006 Passaic New Jersey.

Michael and his mother Anna arrived New York from Bremen 9 October 1930 with his mother Anna who is stated to be a US citizen on the passenger list.

Yes, Anna was his step-mother ... 1930 seem late, 1922 (as someone else found records of) seems more likely but let me do more digging!

Strange it should say daughter Mary is in Czechoslovakia as she's on the 1940 census.

different family ? 1940 census - Anna and Michael
I am confused
Anna Sunda was a woman born in 1881 in Czechoslovakia. During the 1940 US Census she was 59 years old and lived in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. She appears as the wife of her house in the 1940 US Census.
LAST NAME:    Sunda
FIRST NAME:    Anna
MIDDLE NAME:
BIRTH YEAR:    1881
BIRTH PLACE:    Czechoslovakia
COUNTY:    Luzerne
AGE:    59
GENDER:    Female
Residence:    Nicely Street
Conyngham Twp, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
Household Members:
John Sunda (65, Male)
Anna Sunda (59, Female)
Michael Sunda (34, Male)

From the dates given Anna was his wife - her name is listed as Anna Sabol in his obitury

Mary had Polio and was therefore denied access to the USA - they left her there and sent her money every month ... poor thing!
