he has n't got parents for james  on his tree. Looking on his tree the marriage is down as st Matthews Walsall and I've checked on find mypast there is only a transcription but gives marriage date as 1 march 1840 so is post civil reg . The registers are still with the church. It may have been 1 I looked up for him in Walsall archives, their closed at the moment due to covid. So could be ordered from gro or walssall reg office but i'll check and see if he has a copy.

my friend has n't got a copy of the cert unfortunately. Also when civil registration came in, st Matthews was using the old register to record  for a while and there may not always be be parents on but must be on there as freereg has transcribed it.

www.freereg.org.uk  then put his name in and the year of marriage and put Staffordshire from dropdown list. You ca then choose Walsall from drop down list and then press to search. You can probably get it up with just his name and the year range 1840-1840.

Thank you so much everyone that’s amazing 😊. I’ve now found the marriage in 1840. Now I’ll try going up the tree to his father- yet another James Cater- think they like this name lol 😂.
