... I found an E. Garnett born 1876 British army ..service number P83666  Block allocation type Officer but couldnt seem to get any further ...

Almost certainly him, for the full birth date in the record for that service number within the Discharge Indexes (listing those discharged from the armed forces after 1920 and born before 1901) is 10 June 1876. But there is no other information in the record.

... Strange that Captain Garnett is  "my" Ernest as the family were Quakers ... If he was a Quaker, could he have been in the army in a non combatant role, stretcher bearer etc, although doubt he would have had such a high rank?? ...

I had little knowledge of this, so it was interesting to read online about the sheer breadth of Quaker reaction to WW1, from those who wouldn't even sew uniforms for the British soldiers, to those who risked life and limb on the battlefield in non-combatant roles, and those who signed up to fight on the premise that it would bring a speedier end to bloodshed.

Interesting isnt i.t My husbands grandfather Charles Edward Garnett who was Ernest,s cousin was a Quaker and he worked four hours a week as a  orderley in an auxillary hospital in Manchester.Maybe Ernest was one who hoped by joining up he would help it come to an end quicker.
