Edwin Hoult
« on: Saturday 20 June 20 12:09 BST (UK) »
I am having trouble finding accurate details of my g/grandfather Edwin Hoult (Holt)
Born 1863 New York, I am dubious about the place of birth and date.
Married Martha, nee Weaver 1892
Lived in Longton and Cheadle Stoke on Trent
Children Ernest. Florence May, Lizzie, Lilian, Ethel.
Some records say that he had or worked in a clock repair shop in Longton, also as a bailiff.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I think this is the 1911 entry for Edwin and family - transcribed as Hault.  Looking at the image, it is obvious that Edwin only signed the form - as Holt - but it is not the same handwriting as the person who completed the form and Edwin's surname is entered as Hault.

From FreeBMD there is a marriage in Cheadle Registration District - September quarter 1892 - Edwin Henry Hoult, Martha Salt appears on the same page (486)

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

1884 - Cheadle Registration District - Martha Weaver and Ernest Albert Salt

1886 - Cheadle Registration District - Ernest Albert Salt dies aged 24

Ethel Hoult and Lilian Hoult both have mmn = Weaver on birth registrations

There does seem to be some discrepancies about his year of birth, and Martha's, assuming this is the same couple referenced by BumbleB.

GRO references:
1930 Q4 Death: Edwin Henry Hoult; age 57 (born c1873); Stoke And Wolstanton; 06B; 269
1941 Q4 Death: Martha Hoult; age 82 (born c1859); Stoke-On-Trent; 06B; 406

This could be a red herring but who might this Edwin Hoult be?

Cathy

Think he can be discounted as there is a death at 9 months in July 1867 in Kings, New York for an Edwin Holt.

We need to know his Father's name from his marriage certificate.
