Death of ancestor on ship "Andes"
« on: Monday 22 June 20 02:28 BST (UK) »
Hi, hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction with this query.
I have an ancestor who I believe died whilst working on steam ship or Royal mail liner SS or RMS "Andes". I can find his record under Find My Past - British Armed Forces and overseas deaths files but I would like to find out how he died.
I have a probate record for him as having died at the Royal South Hants Hospital on 1 July 1960.
Charles Fred(erick) Biddiscombe born 1900. He was a butcher on board and won the British Empire Medal in the June of this same year so I don't know if these two events are linked.
Has anyone used the Royal South Hants Hospital records at Southampton archives and do they contain details of cause of death? Can anyone suggest where to go online look through Southampton news papers of the time. I live in New Zealand so cannot go into the archives in person.
I appreciate I could order death cert but is there any other place to find such information?
Many thanks
Biddiscombe (Wiltshire).

He died less than 100 years ago so you would need to apply to the local NHS trust for access to any hospital records and you would need to prove your relationship to him. That would involve birth and marriage certificates that would link you to him and would be expensive, there is also no guarantee that your request would be approved. You would be far better buying a copy of the death certificate.
