Now that makes sense, Rosie as the mmn for William Henry Walton in South Shields RD in 1857 is Thompson.

Mary Walton has her place of birth as Gilling/ Richmond , Yorkshire in a number of censuses and there is this baptism....in Gilling.

29 Nov 1824 Mary daughter of Simon and Mary Hall. Abode: Gilling. Fathers's occupation: stonemason.

Pretty sure now that this is the correct family.

Agree that it is difficult to see the correct Thompson/ Hall marriage.

1851 census has a Mary Thompson in Sunderland - born Gilling 1824, a widow and a housekeeper for a doctor, Charles G Lamotte.

Also note that in 1851 George Hall, a mason, b Gilling c 1819 is in Newcastle - looks like his parents were also Simon and Mary and an older brother.

Looks good William ...a tree on Ancestry has the father as Simon Hall mother Mary Hunter
See several records for them along with baptisms for their family ...I think getting a copy of the marriage for John Walton would be the best thing to do ..

Well done rosie17 & Millmoor, think you have cracked it. All I can offer is 1901 census RG13 3540 97 25. Mary Walton "widow" aged 76 born Gilling in the home of Matthew Hutchinson and wife Mary E. This looks to be Mary Elizabeth Walton who married Matthew Hutchinson 1882 South Shields. So John Walton c1823 appears to have died 1891-1901

Just to add and following on from John Hood's post there is a death for a John Walton in South Shields RD Oct - Dec 1893. The National Burial Index has a burial for him 27 Dec 1893 at Harton St Peter while Durham burials give his residence as Harton Workhouse (but this may have been to use the infirmary there) as there is this death notice in the Newcastle Chronicle 26 Dec 1893.

Walton - 45 Stoddart Street , Tyne Dock, John Walton dearly beloved husband of Mary Walton, age 70. Internment on Wednesday at 2.30".

This is the same address as the 1891 census.
