What Uniform is This ?
« on: Tuesday 23 June 20 06:21 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what uniform this lady is wearing ?.....we know that in 1939 she was a trainee nurse, but no-one seems to recognise this uniform.....most likely from WW2 era.....

I may be wrong and someone else know better, but from the light colour of her shirt and the shape of cap badge it looks like the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force to me.

If she is a Corporal in the WAAF here are two more WAAF Corporals.

Lack of RAF eagle on the top of the sleeve.

Tie wrong colour - WAAF ties were dark but ATS similar colour to their shirts.

Would suggest she's army - a corporal in the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service)

ATS cap badge very similar shape to an RAF cap badge

Medpat is right, she is in the ATS.  However, the ATS didn't have nurses so if the family story is right she must transferred in or out of a nursing service.

I would agree that it is ATS and one other thing is certain and that is the uniform is typical armed forces issue. It could almost be said that one size fits all, even if in later years you would see a tailor and be measured for your uniform, you got what the clothing stores had.

I remember the lady who did the measuring told the tailor I was size one, the tailor called to the lady giving out uniforms that I was to be given size 2. Put it on and was swamped, then the tailor set about what alterations there would have to be to get it wearable.  :o

I believe it was to keep the tailors in business  ;) ;D

Thanks to all for the replies.....it's really her husband that I'm trying to find.....Vera married John (Jack) Jay in Taunton in 1946.....she was a probationary nurse in Gainsborough, Lincs, in 1939, she was born there in 1913....their daughter was born at Boston, Lincs, in 1947, and then they moved at some point to Hertfordshire, where she died in 1976......maybe her service in the ATS took her to Taunton ?......
