Michael Daly of WestMeath (Moate, Offlay)
« on: Wednesday 24 June 20 16:07 BST (UK) »
Good Morning,

I'm searching for my great grandfather's family.  His name is Michael Daly (jr.) born Westmeath (Moate, Offlay), March 6, 1867.  Parents are Michael Daly (sr) and Mary (Daly) Daly.  Siblings are:  Kieran, Delia, Mary, James.  Michael Daly Sr was a mason and worked on St. Kieran's Catholic Church in Torrydonnellan, Westmeath.

I found Michael Jr.'s birth record which indicated that his father was a stonemason.  The same for James (1871) and Mary (1875 - although on her record her father was listed as a farmer so I'm not 100% sure its the correct Mary).

My great grandfather, Michael Daly (jr) emigrated around 1880 per census records in the US.  He married Anne McManus in 1894 in Connecticut and died in Hartford, CT in 1926.  His death was only announced as a short notice in the paper, no information available and I could not get his death certificate as the files for that year/letter were not available when I went to search.  He and Anne had two children:  Thomas F. b. 1895 and James Henry (my grandfather) b. 1899.

If anyone has any of these people in your trees, I would appreciate any information you might have that you are willing to share,  particularly surrounding the marriage of Michael Sr and his wife Mary, and information on their children.  I could find nothing on the births of Kieran or Delia in civil records.

Thank you,
Laura

Michael and Mary's marriage 1867

His father is a labourer, hers a farmer, both named James.

The church record has a dispensation I think for Banns but there seems to be a second one, you need someone who can read Latin and his handwriting

Right hand page second marriage.

Hello Laura,

I am not related to your family however something struck me when I read your post. You said that you could find nothing on the births of Kieran or Delia in the civil records.

I don't know how sure you are that the lady was called Delia. I have come across the name Della in that part of the country on a number of occasions. The people called Della were christened Bridget. There is a birth registration for a Bridget on 28th January 1969

The parish register has a baptism for Kieran on 13th October 1878 https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632446#page/163/mode/1up

Thank you both so much.  This is great information.  The guidance around the name Delia is especially helpful.  That was the name my Mom always told us and I never thought of it as a variant.

So again, thank you both!
