Parish Records?
« on: Wednesday 24 August 05 11:05 BST (UK) »
Can anyone give me some advice re checking an entry in old parish records?

My ancestor Abraham Hounsom was born November 1819 in Clerkenwell, Middlesex. The IGI Index shows his baptism the following April at Providence Chapel, Tichfield Street & Grays Inn Street, St Marylebone. Not sure if this comes under Middlesex or London?

However, it also shows another baptism for him in 1828 at Tong, Shropshire. Both entries give his parents as Edward and Susan(ah)........could he have been baptised twice? The family definitely moved to Shropshire as all Abraham's children were born there.
It is odd though as Abraham's siblings' baptisms are all in London but none of them appears to have been baptised again.....

I would like to check both these entries to see if there is any more info contained in them and would like to know how to go about it.

Many thanks for any help,
Helen

RE

ABRAM HOUNSOM
Birth:  30 NOV 1819
Christening:  12 APR 1820   Providence Chapel Tichfield Street And Grays Inn Street, Saint Marylebone, London, England
Father:  EDWARD HOUNSOM
Mother:  SUSANAH

ABRAHAM HOUNSOM
Birth:  29 NOV 1819
Christening:  01 JUN 1828   Tong, Shropshire, England
Father:  EDWARD HOUNSOM  Family
Mother:  SUSAN

This does not answer all your questions but it may help.

Marylebone
Created 1st July 1837. Abolished 1901 (renamed St. Marylebone). In Middlesex until 1889.
Sub-districts : All Souls; Cavendish Square; Christchurch; North Marylebone; Rectory; St. John; St. Mary.
GRO volumes : I (1837-51); 1a (1852-1901).
St. Marylebone.
Registers now in Westminster district.

The name Providence Chapel suggests to me that it was a non-conformist establishment - probably Methodist  - and the use of the name appears more than once within different areas of London in respect of the local Chapel.. The non-conformist movement in the mid 1880’s was extensive with some areas of the country estimated to be 60% of the local population.

It was not uncommon for a person to be baptized Methodist and then later on baptized into the Church of England or vice versa. I have examples of this re my own ancestors, and it can cause confusion because sometimes the second baptism gets recorded as (or gives the impression of being) a birth!

There was a sibling of Abraham’s also baptized at the chapel in Tichfield Street:
NAOMI HOUNSOM
Birth:  28 SEP 1806
Christening:  29 DEC 1806   Providence Chapel Tichfield Street And Grays Inn Street,  Saint Marylebone, London, England
Father:  EDWARD HOUNSOM
Mother:  SUSANH.

It may be that the entire family started off as (for example) Methodist and that later on they collectively . . . or individually . . . chose to enter the Church of England. The principal (if not only) Cof E church in Tong is St. Bartholomew. It could have been that there was not a Methodist place of worship at that time in Tong and the family opted for a “change” of religion.

Hi there,
Yes, I have seen this before. I once saw an entry thta a child was baptised in the village church and then a few weeks later baptised again in the village methodist chapel just a few hundred yards down the road !

It's not uncommon to baptise twice - is the word "received" in the margin ?? It means "recieved" into the church  - this is quite common too !

Good Luck
