J W Hellary
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 04:54 BST (UK) »
Trying to find information regarding James William Hellary who was in the First World War and was wounded. I do not know where he was at the time or who his unit was.  Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

06 November 1917 - Weekly Casualty List (War Office & Air Ministry)

Access to the newspapers is via the Bitish Newspaper Archive. You can register and get three free looks. After that there is a sub.
Or you can access the, via a FindMyPast sub.

6 November 1917 is the date of publication of the Weekly Casualty list which was composed of the daily casualty lists from 20 October to 3 November.  His name appears on the 1 November list.

However, the lists are compilations of casualties suffered in the days before each date and are days, sometimes weeks behind the event.  Without other evidence, it is safe only to say he was wounded perhaps in mid to late October and his name published on the 1 November list.

The list shows he was in the Royal Garrison Artillery.  He was discharged on 27 Feb 1918 with a Silver War Badge no longer physically fit and shows he was in 150 Siege Battery when discharged.

His medal card survives: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D2814180 as does his SWB card: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01png/  (mis transcribed as Hillary).  The mis-transcription is no doubt the reason he returned his medals for amendment of his name.  The remainder of his record seems not to have survived.

The only war diary for 150 Siege does not cover the period - more work needed!

He was admitted to the Gen. Hospital at St. Omer 27/9/17 so taking into account his passage through the medical chain you may have to look 1-2 weeks prior to that.
He received a gun shot wound to left arm & hand.

Thank you ShaunJ - having spotted the SWB mis transcription I should have re-looked with Hillary but didn't - big fail!

His battery had been under 67 Heavy Artillery Group since 4 July 1917 to 5 Oct 1917.  The war diary for September can be downloaded free here:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/93be0cef176447d3861e1ae5353e62d2  (The brigade title is an alternative title).

As the diary covers more than one battery, detail may be sparse!
