William Hagger/Haggar b.c.1887
« on: Monday 29 June 20 04:29 BST (UK) »
Help to identify this young man is needed please.
According to 1901 census he was born London but his parentage starts Epping Essex...…
William Hagger/Haggar born 11 Dec 1859 Epping lives with his parents Henry and Betsy and siblings 1861-1881 Bell Common Epping.
1891 it appears he is the William aged 30 b. Epping is HoH no occ. stated Living  Mile End Rd,
In April 1893 Bethnal Green he marries Emily Eliza Strange.*
1901 census we find William and Emily with  William 13 (c. 1887)**,Emily 8, Charlie 7 and Sarah 5 living
West Ham/Stratford area.
1911 William and Emily live with Charles and Sarah back in Bell Common Epping.
Stated 4 births 4 living.
Both died in Epping.
* Emily Eliza Strange bpt 8 March 1863 All Saints Epping.
Found poor law removal settlement for her November 1887 Bethnal Green which although hard for me to read suggest she moved around a lot.
1891 Emily is 28 a servant living Bancroft Rd MEOT which is one of the addresses on poor law record.
In 1871 she lived in Epping with parents and 1881 a servant in Theydon Bois.

So this is background to the 'parents' of William 1887 but whose son is he? and what happened to him?
Other children
Emily May Haggar bpt 3 Sept. 1893 record shows she was born 3 Feb 1893. Now an Emily Strange was born at that time but it seems she was re-registerd in Sept 1893 as Emily May Haggar.
Charlie/Charles is actually Charles William Haggar b.1894 , KIA 1915 but shown as W.C Haggar ( William Haggar) his service record names his parents William, Emily and brother William and sisters.

Apologies for making this so long but thought background might help work out just who William 1887 actually is, before I pull the rest of my hair out.

Not the same one, I've found him with family, right father, right occupation - carpet fitter. He was born in Pimlico not Bethnal Green

I've found what looks like an index for removal records dated 8 Dec 1887. Under Emily's name it says single pregnant. So if obviously pregnant in early December then it does tie in with birth in first quarter 1888. Presumably she didn't get removed or went and came back.

There's a Mile End workhouse discharge record for an Emily Strange of right age on 6th Feb 1893, it says to infirmary. Ties in with dob of Emily May

The mystery is where is William Arthur Strange in 1891. Not with Emily's parents, the Willie Jeffrey - grandson of similar age is reg in Epping mmn Strange so looks like a child of Emily's sister.

Good find. Both illegitimate children born in workhouse, then. Emily sent back to Epping after the birth, then comes back to London in 1891. Maybe one of her siblings is looking after William in 1891.
