I think I am bowing out now, there is so much  information for the originator to digest and I don't want to repeat myself

Take care

Keep up the good work :)

Living with her was Lily Unwin, Single b. (27 June 1882)

Eliza Unwin died 1919.

and ... Who was Lily Unwin who was living with Gertrude in 1939?
I believe Lily was an adopted daughter to Joshua  and Eliza
census RG12/1278 FOLIO 32 PAGE 11

INCLUDED along with Joshua and Eliza
Lily Maskell aged 8 along with sister Nelly

also

1901
Lily Maskell adp dau aged 18
Nelly   ditto                      20, both born Sussex

That is my thoughts and Lily took on Joshua's surname

Not sure if there is a connection here Lydia has same dob as Lily

Lydia Bertha MASKELL
Birth 27 6 1882
Death quarter   3
Death year   1975

Lydia Bertha Maskell of 29 Homefield Clo Impington Cambs
Death 23 Jul 1975
Probate 19 Sep 1975

EDIT to add

Apologies bobtonks had over looked your reply with the death entry for Lydia and my own at reply 8 ::)

Lydia Bertha Maskell's parents were George Maskell and Sarah Ann Fowler.

Sarah Ann  died 1883 and George married  Sarah Ann Unwin, sister of Joshua.

George died 1886

George's father Thomas also married an Unwin, Mary in 1845. The daughter of Thomas and Mary, Eliza Maskell married Joshua Unwin.  ........ all gets very complicated.

Although there is a death record for Lydia Bertha Maskell Sept 1975 Cambridge,

you are probably correct in that everyone thought of Lily as an UNWIN.
