Skipton District Burial Look-Up
« on: Monday 29 June 20 21:33 BST (UK) »
Good evening

I am searching for the burial place of my gt, gt, grandfather, Robert Brotherton born 1846 died Nov 1920 Kelbrook.I have posted previously but without success. According to a contributor on a Facebook thread I have been informed that the registration district council (Skipton) keeps a record of burials alongside the death registration. Is this the case, please? I'm kind of doubtful otherwise I am sure it would have been suggested years ago.

Thank you.

Kind regards
Amanda

Skipton Registration District contained 52 parishes!
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/skipton.html

Kelbrook was in the parish of Thornton in Craven.
"KELBROOK, in the township and parish of Thornton in Craven, east-division and liberty of Staincliffe; 4 miles N. of Colne, (Lanc.) 9 from Skipton, 10 from Burnley, (Lanc.)"

There is a cemetery at Earby?

Hi

I have checked various cemeteries in the area but can't find him. I have been informed that the burial is registered by the council along with the death.

Thank you.

Kind regards

Hi Amanda,  according to Wharfegen.org.UK.   Family history,  there were lots of "Brotherton" lived in Kirby Malham near Skipton.   The church,  St  Michael`s has a large graveyard.    worth checking out... Give them an email. All Yorkshire people are friendly :) ;)    Good hunting.  Bert.

Have you contacted local churches as well as looking online? As far as I can see, any registers for Kelbrook church are still held locally, as are burials at Thornton-in-Craven after 1903.

Another line of enquiry might be the Earby and District Local History Society - http://www.earbyhistory.co.uk/

They appear to have quite extensive holdings of local material including register and memorial transcripts, newspaper cuttings, photos etc.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Hi

I contacted St Mary's in Kelbrook many years ago. The records for St Mary Le Ghyll are at the archives for that date. I have searched other Church records where possible but I tend to think he is more likely to be in a public cemetery rather than a church hence my query with St Mary Le Ghyll but I could be wrong.

I have joined the Facebook group for Earby and District Local History Society so fingers crossed.

Thank you.
