« on: Wednesday 24 August 05 14:10 BST (UK) »

I have just found my Winston family in the 1861 Census living in Onchan on the Isle of Man.

I can't however make out the address ?? Can any help with any suggestions.

Thank you

I'd hazard a guess at:

36 Fort Street

Good luck!

Thanks for the Suggestion Lyn, I have put Fort Street into "streetmap" but nothing for the Isle of Man  :(

Hmmm maybe the street was renamed or does not exist anymore  ??? ???

Fort street was one of the many demolished during the Douglas Slum clearances in 1930's and then later - for various descriptions etc try www.manxnotebook.com/towns/douglas/index.htm - the street is still there but in name only

BTW tho the census shows Onchan Fort street was in the heart of Old Douglas which is in the ecclesiastical parish of Braddan and at that period the Civil parish of Onchan - the town got its own council etc later in 1860's
any thing with a Manx Connection

Hi Frances,

Sorry for my delay.

Thank you for your reply, the Manxnotebook was great I have had a good look and have saved it. It is a shame the buildings are no longer around, as soon, as I find new addresses in my research I am always interested to see what they are like. Guess I am just nosy  ;D
