Official adoptions (where there is a paper trail) began in 1926.

The fact that there are Dawsons named on the marriage certificate, even if one first name is not clear, means that at that time she considered herself to be a member of the Dawson family, even if she wasn't born Dawson.

Yet there's very little Census info for the Dawson name showing Irene in a household. Could it be plausible to be that untraceable? By averting mentioning a person on a Census? ( Not Legal I'm sure )

I feel that seen as there's little supporting help from current surviving family relations, I might have to resign to the fact, that there could be something shameful in the history of my Grandmothers parents.

Maybe the possibility of being born out of wedlock? An affair, or under an age birth or similar, which would have been hugely frowned upon in the early 1900's, when children born to unmarried parents might have been taken away into the care of the local parish, adopted or placed into a relatives household etc.

I just find it extremely odd how every person on my Grandmother's marriage certificate except my Grandfather don't appear to have any leads linking them together. 2 Witnesses a father and the Bride. It just doesn't add up!!

any help welcomed and thanks to those who have tried to already.
