Newtownards Academy , East and West St, 1840s
« on: Monday 13 July 20 14:43 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know about the history or records of this school?.... Slaters Directory of 1846 has the following

" West St
  Robert Alexander , master
  Mary Anne Bingham , mistress
Prenter, Rev Edward (Classical and Merchantile), East St."

I suspect Robert is related to Rev Nathaniel Alexander who ran an Academy in Crumlin and who was married to a daughter of the Rev John Bankhead. Rev Prenter , family tradition has it , was married to another daughter of Rev John but no definitive proof has so far surfaced.

Note, this is not the school that was renamed "Newtownards Academy " in 1920s

In addition to school registers, PRONI has lots of records which pertain to individual schools (inspections, correspondence, building, etc.) which can be a goldmine of information. There e-catalogue should show what they hold.

Here's a bit of information about the Grant Aid details (ED1 forms)-

PRONI used to have a series of leaflets on various research topics including one on education records (may be online somewhere) but the clip here (part 5) would be worth watching to get an idea on the records-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I suspect Robert is related to Rev Nathaniel Alexander who ran an Academy in Crumlin..........
