I tried Walton but that does not match up with the facts and Walter does.

I would say it is probably Walter as I can get quite a few of that name come up.  What is the snippet from and when and where?

It is the marriage of Joseph Mark and Margaret Boal in Belfast in 1906.

I thought her parents were Joseph Boal and Jane Cook but the fathers name is definitely not Joseph.
Then I found a birth of a Margaret Boal to parents Walter Boal and Martha Dickey and as soon as I saw Walter then I thought that this looked right.

You could try finding Margaret in the 1901 to see if she is with her father and check the name that way.  Or perhaps a baptism record for Margaret.

I found a Maggie Boal (correct age) living with a Walter and Martha Boal on the 1901 census that fits.and I also found a baptism record for Margaret Boal to Walter and Martha in 1886 as well.

Well if you have the double proof of a census record and the baptism then one has to assume that Walter's name was not heard correctly when the marriage cert was filled in.  Or whoever wrote it had a 'senior moment' and wrote the end of the name down wrong.

Exactly my thoughts haha

One thing I can be sure of is that the name definitely does not say Joseph.
