John Stride married Susannah Rossiter on 6 November 1784 at Eling.
They had 9 children, first being Joseph bapt 13 Mar 1785, then Elizabeth, Thomas, Henry, James, Susanna, George, Mary Ann and Sarah. I have baptisms of all the children.
Susannah Rossiter was baptised at Eling on 27 July 1760 d/o Joseph and Susannah, but which John Stride is the correct one.
Assuming he was also born in Eling, I have found 3 likely candidates
bapt 21 Feb 1759 s/o Philip and Elizabeth
bapt 12 Jan 1763 s/o Thomas no mother named
bapt 10 Jun 1764 s/o John no mother named.
I tend toward his father being Thomas, because he named his second son Thomas (first being named for father in law) and he didn't have a son called Philip or John.
There are two other baptisms at similar sort of time with father Thomas. Elizabeth 1760 and Benjamin 1769 - no mother mentioned in either case.
The best match for marriage I have found is Thomas Stride to jane King in Plaitford in 1756. Plaitford abt 8 miles from Eling. There is a baptism in Landford Wilts for a Thomas on 22 May 1757, s/o Thomas and Jane and it says residence Eling Hampshire. Landford is quite close to Plaitford. So this could be the same family.
Can anyone verify my theory or give a more plausible reason why he is one of the other two.
Beware: Many online trees have changed his name to Jonathan and have him as the son of Jonathan Stride and his first wife Martha Moses. Then having him marrying both Susannah Rossiter and Mary Painter in consecutive years and having a large brood of children with each in two different locations.
