I think that to and will have a look but with a name like Ann Dodds there may be quite a few options and then I dont think I can rule out Ann Dodds who lived until at least 1939 who is listed as a widow
as its within 5 miles from where my Ann lived most of her married life.

In any case  I am going to order the MC for her marriage in 1875

Thank you for your help Carole    I appreciate it very much.

Jim

Have you considered putting a snip of it on the handwriting board, even though it really looks like Rattleforth someone might have a suggestion as to what the enumerator was trying to write.

The only *leforth appears to be Ampleforth, and the only Rattle* I got was Rattler plantation.

It looks like Rattleforth to me, but I can't find anywhere with a name that sounds like that.
Durham Records Online have transcribed it as Rattleforth.

I thought it could be the name of a farm, but there is nothing on the Northumberland Farm Index that resembles it.

We really need to know her father's name, which should help pinpoint her in earlier censuses.

Hello all from Winnipeg.

I have received the marriage certificate for Ann Wardle  to find out who her father was
Marriage took place in the Register office in Houghton Le Springs 27 Feb 1875 between

John George Dodds 28 years (Batchelor) and
Ann Wardle 22 years (spinster)
Neither witnesses (Thomas Wardle and William Robinson) could write
He signed his name (she placed an x)
His occupation - coalminers - her occupation - blank
Both resident at Spring Gardens, Newbottle
Fathers names - John Dodds - coalminer
                           Thomas Wardle - coalminers

She was 22 at the time of the marriage which would her birth 1852/53

However I have found her on census records after the wedding and in 1881 she is 21  and in 1891
she is 33 so I would think the date on the marriage record is right.  Her place of birth on the 1881 is Rattleforth and on the second she must not be to sure or the person giving the info as its states Northumberland

I then looked backed on  the 1861 and 1871 census records for a Ann Wardle born to a father called Thomas likely in Northumberland in a place called Rattleforth or something close but did not found any Thomas Wardle's in Northumberland or Durham that fit and the one I did find did not have a daughter called Ann on the census records and the profession was not in the coal mining industry.

Can anyone advise me what my next step should be to see where Ann was born or does anyone see them on the 1861 and 1871 census records and I just overlooked it.

Thank you for everyone's help

Jim

Working on "She was 22 at the time of the marriage which would her birth 1852/53"

I found this baptism

Elizabeth Ann Wardle
Baptism date   24 May 1850
Place      Newcastle upon Tyne, St Andrew, Northumberland
Father Thomas, Mother Catherine

I know this is for Elizabeth Ann but she could have dropped the Elizabeth later on

1851 census  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGXW-CGY
1861 cesus https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7NN-5YD
1871 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V511-VTX

The father Thomas on the 1851 appears to die in 1854

THOMAS   WARDLE,   Aged   42
GRO Reference: 1854  Jun Quarter in NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE  Volume 10B  Page 55

Not saying this is the family of your Ann but worth exploring?
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Thank you for you reply.   I looked for a marriage of Elizabeth Ann Wardle in the Newcastle area circa1870 to 1880 to see if this would either make her possible or likely not possible and found this.
Name:   Elizabeth Ann Wardle
Registration Year:   1874
Registration Quarter:   Apr-May-Jun
Registration district:   Newcastle upon Tyne
Parishes for this Registration District:   View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
Inferred County:   Northumberland
Volume:   10b
Page:   32
Records on Page:
Name
Ann Hoult
Matthew Coulson
Robert Urwin
Elizabeth Ann Wardle

I think this would be the Elizabeth Ann you found or a very strong possiblity so do not believe it is my Ann Wardle.

Hello from Tyneside  :)

 http://www.marriage-locator.co.uk/cgi-bin/ML_search.cgi?test=&year=1874&qtr=2&vol=10b&page=32&search=search

I put the wrong page number in so have amended post.  1874 marriage was at the Jesmond Clayton Memorial Church.
