Portland Wesleyan Chapel - Westbury-on-Trym or Kingsdown, Bristol ?
« on: Monday 27 July 20 22:29 BST (UK) »
Hello, can anybody help me on a burial location query ?
I have an ancestor, Ralph Wilcoxon, who was buried on 5 Jan 1803. The original ledger on FindMyPast says this took place in, "GLOUCESTER: Westbury on Trym, Portland Chapel (Wesleyan): Burials". However, I can find no trace of this.
Meanwhile... the only Portland Chapel that I can find anywhere near is the Portland Methodist Chapel in Kingsdown in Bristol - which is 3 miles to the south of Westbury on Trym.
So, are/were these the same place ? Or two different ones ?  If the former, where would the burial have taken place ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Also from BAFHS, this info re the parish of Westbury-on-Trym:

The former south Gloucestershire parish of Westbury-on-Trym once extended over a very large area: to the south-west took in Stoke Bishop and Sneyd Park edging onto Clifton Down (the old parish marker stone is still there) then almost into the city of Bristol itself; and further south to east took in a part of Kingsdown, Cotham, Redland, Westbury Park, Henleaze, and Southmead. The parish marker for Westbury and St. James (Bristol) is still in Kingsdown churchyard.

Hi Simon,

I've just joined RootsChat and was interested to see your post of a few years ago. Ralph Wilcoxon was my ancestor too - my 3 x great uncle. I know Ralph was born near Frodsham, Cheshire around 1755 and moved to Bristol between 1792-98 where he was a linen draper. He married Catherine Bennett in Chester in 1782. I have a copy of his will but I don't know much about his life in Bristol before he died in 1803. It seems he didn't have any children and I don't know what became of his wife Catherine. I'd love to hear from you if you can fill me in on any details/tell me how you're related.
