Duke St Women's Prison Headstone

Hi
Hope you can help. My dad is 86 and we got talking about the necropolis one day. he worked as a marble and granite cutter with Toffolo Jackson's.He mentioned the women's prison in Duke-street which was demolished a long long time ago.

Years later during excavation work in the area, They found a gravestone of some sort which was sent to his work for restoration.

The stone had a list of names on it. He cut the stone to size then it was sent elsewhere to get the lettering re cut. According to him it may be in the necropolis. It would be great find it again

Dose anyone have any information about this stone? I don't have any names on the stone. so I don't
know where to start.

Can your dad remember roughly when the gravestone was found? 

I see that you are referring to the prison that was in Glasgow and closed in the mid 1950s.  So presumably the gravestone was found after that, but how much longer after that?

There may have been a newspaper report at the time about it being found and restored.

Can t find anything about the stone in the papers, there was a photo of employees of Toffolo Jacksons, St Peters Lane, Aberdeen in 1975, perhaps your Dad was there then.

Hi 

It was the prison in duke street also know as a Bridewell. he can't remember it could have been late
80s early 90s but not sure.

While looking I found out it was demolished in 1958 to eventually make way for the Ladywell housing scheme which was built on the site from 1961- 1964 and stands till this day.

I know it's not much to go on, he could have worked on the stone in the 70s

Will have a look on Hidden Glasgow . My dad's never been to toffolo's in Aberdeen. I didn't know they had a place in Aberdeen and Dundee
