Mother Gwendoline H in (I would say the H could be Hackney)

Probably ‘Hackney Union Central Institution’, which was the main workhouse in Homerton High Street. Hackney was a union that was eager to get rid of the term ‘Workhouse’, well before the 1929 Act formally abolished it in favour of ‘Public Assistance Institution’.

Thank you that's what was confusing me as I didnt expect to see institution listed before the changes to the names around 1930.

The other main change took place on April 23rd, 1919, when again the Clerk officially barred the words “Hackney Union Workhouse” and replaced them with “Hackney Central Institution”.

As often happens, practice preceded the legislation.
