The 1901 Census on Ancestry has Geo, Annie, Mary and William, no James but that defintely sounds like him  Do I need to order a copy from SP or is it online elsewhere?

If you want to see the original you need to view it on SP, but you don't need to order a copy as you can download the digitised image once it's paid for.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Is that James Kerr(age 62) living with his son George Smith Kerr and his wife Annie Totten , on the 1901 Census in Cambuslang Lanark ?
From another transcription, There is a 62-year-old James Kerr, single, lamp trimmer, born Glencorse, Midlothian, in Cambuslang in 1901.

George S Kerr is aged 10, living with his father George, 32, born Ireland, mother Mary, older brother William and younger siblings Elizabeth and Richard in Glasgow in 1901.

In Thornton, Fife in 1891 are James Kerr, 52, coal miner, born Midlothian, wife Annie, plus sons Henry, Allan and George. In 1881 the family is in Lasswade, James, 41, blacksmith, born Glencorse, Midlothian, wife Ann, eight Kerr children and two Hunter stepchildren. Son James is aged 11, born Lasswade.

So it does look possible that the 'single' 62-year-old lamp trimmer in Cambuslang is Annie's widower.

Who registered the death of Annie Donnelly or Hunter or Kerr?

Yes. But the transcription I am looking at lists George Kerr, 22, head, with wife Annie, daughter Mary and son William, and no James Kerr, so you'd need to look at the original census document to find out what it actually says.

Ancestry have George, a coal miner, his wife Annie and children Annie and William living at Main St, Cambuslang.

Also on Main St is a James Kerr b. 1839 in Dalkeith Midlothian. He shows as head of household. Occupation very much like the other James, that of a light trimmer (although ancestry have it as Lamp Trimones  ::)).

Maybe the entry has been split on the index on Ancestry v. SP?

Staying with Ancestry, they also have a Jame Kerr b. 1839 in Glencorse Midlothian. He shows as a boarder with a Pringle family at 14 Colebrooke St Cambuslang. Occupation is also a Lamp Trummer this time  ::)

Original image will hopefully help here.

There is an extensive family tree on ancestry here www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/2206972/person/422097035970/facts Is this yours?

It shows a brother, Alexander born 1874 having died 1914 in the Edinburgh area. This should let you narrow down the window of James' death a little more hopefully depending on whether father shows as alive or deceased in 1914.

So here it is, seems it was transcribed as two separate families.  So info does narrow my search a bit.
The 1881 Lasswade and 1891 Thornton Fife are the same family.  James was a blacksmith, a coal miner and now a lamp trimmer.  The tree on Ancestry belongs to a third cousin and one of my DNA matches. We seem to be stuck on the same ancestors but she has the advantage of actually living in Glasgow for research purposes!  Thanks to all!
