Marriage Bond and/or Allegation 1788 - EVANS/PUGH
« on: Wednesday 05 August 20 14:56 BST (UK) »
On 11 Apr 1788 Hugh PUGH and Elizabeth EVANS obtained a licence to marry at Llanycil. The bridegroom was a joiner. The index from National Library of Wales gives a reference Ref 113/59. I would like to know if the licence or the marriage in the registers might give more information. Specifically the bondsman and witnesses might prove to be relatives. I hope that the bride was of Fedw Arian, if I should be so lucky that this info was recorded.

Can anyone help?
Thanks a bunch,
Irene

The image for the marriage is available on FindMyPast.  Bride's name is Mary Evans, not Elizabeth.  Hugh was a widower, and Mary a spinster.  Both signed the register.  Witnesses:  Griffith Pugh and ? Richards.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

The marriage you cite on FindMyPast took place at Llanymawddwy in December 1788 rather than at Llanycil in April 1788 - so this is not the marriage I was referring to. Shortage of surnames makes this more difficult, doesn't it?

The marriage bond index gives these details:
Title: Pugh, Hugh, bach., joiner, [Llanycil, Merioneth to Evans, Elizabeth, sp., Llanycil, Merioneth : 1788 Apr. 11.
Is Part Of Marriage bonds, ca. 1690-1837 99230987302419

I was just about to give the ref. I know the person who processed them and he wouldn't get it wrong.

No marriages are showing for Llanycil 1788+/- 5 years.  I'm wondering if the Bala/Llanycil records have been withdrawn. I know that some parishes were taken off FindMyPast.

I might have the Clwyd fhs booklets. I'll take a look.

Thanks for the marriage info. Elizabeth's father was William Evans - a well-known Calvinist preacher. So this seems possible at least, even though there are lots of other William Evanses in the parish. I would still like to know what the bond and allegation says. I'm not sure that the marriage bonds are available away from the Library. Perhaps someone with a reader's ticket might know?

And it's interesting though very disappointing that the Llanycil marriages are missing from FindMyPast. I wonder why.

Elizabeth re-marries in Devonport in 1804 so presumably Hugh Pugh dies. I haven't been able to locate an obvious burial for him in Llanycil or adjacent parishes. And not in Devonport either. Nor have I found any children for this couple though Elizabeth was already the mother of an illegitimate daughter Anne Frances before she married Hugh.

Thanks for the help,
Irene

Usually, you can get copies of the bonds from the NLW. The update here says that the commercial reprographic services are available from 1 August.
