1881/1891 Census Look-Up, Please
« on: Friday 07 August 20 22:51 BST (UK) »
Good evening

I am trying to track down Charles Brotherton born 1837 Bolton-Le-Moors, Lancashire. I have found two marriages in Scotland but don't know if either are mine. One marriage is to Felicia Bains and the other Margaret McCormack. One fits the correct age group below.

References I have are:

1881      622/1 9/ 4    Maryhill Lanark

1891      622/1 12/ 56  Maryhill  Lanark

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Kind regards
Amanda

1901 census for Dalziel parish, town of Motherwell.
Charles Brotherton, aged 55 years, born England.
Carrie Brotherton, wife, aged 53, born England.

He is a blacksmith, so it doesn't seem to be the same guy as in the 1881 Maryhill census.

McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,

It looks like Charles was married twice, this is the same man as in the 1881 census, check the youngest child in this census and compare with Agnes in the 1881.

1871 census 83 Whitelaw Street.
Charles, head, aged 32, born England.
Margaret, wife, aged 34, born Ireland.
Margaret, daughter, aged 13, born ??????? Lanarkshire.
Mary Ann, daughter, aged 10, born Campsie.
Charles, son, aged 7, born Campsie.
Jeanie, daughter, aged 4, born Campsie.
Agnes, daughter, aged 1 year, born Campsie.
Agnes McCormack, mother-in-law, aged 65, born Ireland.

It looks like Margaret aged 13 years was born in Dalkeith, which is near Edinburgh (not in Lanarkshire) according to Scotlandspeople her middle name seems to be Paterson.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.

There is a death recorded in the district of Maryhill in 1872 for Margaret Brotherton/McCormack.

Interestingly, there is also a death for a Margaret Brotherton, aged 44, in the district of Milton for 1874.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.

Here's another one!
There is a Charles Brotherton aged 43 in the 1851 census for Blantyre parish.
He is listed as being a butler at "Whistleberry Toad Craighurd House".
This is Ancestry speak for "Craighead House, Whistleberry Road".
It say he was born at "Humbs" in Haddingtonshire but there is, I am certain, no such place! Dalkeith would have been in Haddingtonshire, which is now East Lothian, so there must be, I think, a connection. Could this be the father of your Charles?
I can remember Craighead House, a rather grand mansion, it became a monastery but was demolished a few years ago.

Thank you for all of this info. Certainly a lot to work with. A pity the place of birth has no more detail than born in England. I'll need to check all births to see if any correspond with this Charles to figure out whether he's mine or not. Being born in 1837 may be tricky though.

Thanks gain  ;D

Kind regards

Hi

The father of the Charles I am looking for is Reuben Brotherton. The last trace I have of Charles is in 1861 as an unmarried grocer in Manchester. It looks as though my search will continue. There was another Charles born in 1839 that may tie in with the above. I was hopeful one of these could be my Charles because I am pretty sure there was a Reuben born to Charles and Margaret but that was 1859 when Charles was still in Manchester.

Thanks again
