Hi,
I’m trying to find some information on another relative who died in WW1.  My family don’t have much information on him.

He was Edward Cecil Shaw born 1898 Yorkshire.  His father was Thomas Turner Shaw and his mother Ada Shaw.  He moved to Blackpool then to Manchester with his family, we’ve found him in 1911.

He died 24th October 1917 France & Flanders age 19.  Could this date tie in with him dying at Passchendale?

He was with the Manchester Regiment number 203113 .

We’re hoping to visit Ypres in the future and visit the area where they were positioned and died.  Any help as to whether this area could be Passchendale or whether he had a grave etc would be great to find out and help us on our visit.

Thank you

So that looks like no known grave.
If CWGC are unable to give you a grave location,  then no one can.

You do realise also that Passchendaele was the Third battle of Ypres? It's not named for a town.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

Yes it was just to try confirm that the 21st battalion of the Manchester Regiment were in the Passchendale battle on the 24th October, so when we visit Ypres we can also visit the Passchendale area.

It will give us an idea of the area around Ypres (as there are quite a few areas/towns) even if it maybe a field or somewhere we can just go to remember Edward Cecil.

You won't have to go far.
He was South of the Menin Rd.
They'd obviously moved very quickly from their previous position
& were here on the 24th. relieving other Batn's that had been involved in the fighting.
Their turn to go out came on the 26th. but unfortunately your man had already been killed
by heavy shelling 2 days previously.
They were in square 20 along the yellow line on the 24th.
