Benjamin NEWINGTON's first wife
« on: Monday 10 August 20 17:05 BST (UK) »
Benjamin NEWINGTON son of John NEWINGTON & Elizabeth CHELE was baptised 14 Oct 1650 Salehurst, Sussex.

Benjamin's remains interred 15 Dec 1709 at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England.

His second marriage to Katherine BYSHE was at St Stephen's, Coleman Street on 26 Dec 1692 and so he would have been about 42 years of age.  The couple married by Licence and as yet I have not located same.  Katherine aged 26 was a Widow and Benjamin a widower.

I have hit a brick wall in locating Benjamin's first marriage and Katherine's also and would greatly appreciate some assistance.

I'm not even sure I have posted to the correct board.

Groom's residence SRY Southwark, St Saviour.
Bride's residence SRY Streatham

The allegation for the marriage licence shows that Benjamin was a widower of St Saviour Southwark, aged about 26. Dorothy was aged about 17, marrying with the consent of her mother, Christian Lea, widow.

So if this is your man, you'll be looking for an earlier marriage as well.

I hope to find Dorothy's burial.

Dorothy was buried at Streatham, 11 January 1689/90 -- indexed as Mrs Dorothy Herrington, of St Saviour Southwark.

Hello Bookbox,

That is brilliant and many thanks.  :) :) :)

Is the Allegation available online and if so where could I locate it please?  If not do you have a reference for the record please?

It's a Diocese of Winchester marriage allegation. You'll find it on Ancestry in the database London and Surrey, England, Marriage Bonds and Allegations, 1597-1921.

Hello Bookbox,

Many thanks.

I located Benjamin's first wife Elizabeth whose maiden name and date of marriage is as yet unknown.  She was buried 30 Apr 1682 at St Saviour, Southwark.

Bookbox -- thank you so much for finding Dorothy's burial -- I did check later and couldn't find one AT ALL! Thank you also for the tip about the records on the Ancestry site. Much appreciated (even though it's not my query).

No problem. It was likely to be St Saviour or Streatham, so I searched those two parishes separately for Dor* between 1684 and 1692. Best to enter minimum data and avoid surnames at this period, if possible, as Ancestry’s transcriptions can’t be relied on.
