My query was for Robert Scott, age 32, living with his mother and siblings.  I was looking for a Robert Scott with an unusual occupation.

Name Robt Scott
County:   Lanarkshire
Address:   184 Crown St
Occupation:   Shanl Mercht

Source Citation
Parish: Gorbals; ED: 16; Page: 12; Line: 15; Roll: CSSCT1851_163; Year: 1851

Stan

On another site it is transcribed as ‘shaul’ mercht.

Yes that is the record I was looking at.  Was “Shaul” on FindMyPast?  Are their records more accurate?  My ancestors mostly in Scotland with a few in England (but very close to Scotland) and Northern Ireland.
BARRIE - Rutherglen     BENNETT - Wigtown, Glasgow
BURKE  - Lanarkshire, Ireland   CAMERON - Renfrew
CURLE - Dumfries    FRATER - Lesmahagow
GENTLES - Sterling    GOLDIE - Paisley
GRAHAM - Roxburgh    HASTIE -Edinburgh
KERR  - Glencorse and Cambuslang
LOWRIE - Rutherglen and Ireland
McDONALD - Edinburgh and Cambuslang
MOYIES - Rutherglen    PICKEN - Kilmarnock
RAEBURN - Kilmarnock, Glasgow    SCOTT - Glasgow

It is not the accuracy of the record, it is the accuracy of whoever transcribe the record.

Never trust a transcription. As Carole said, your best bet is to buy a few credits on Scotlands People and view the census page image yourself.

That's an odd thing to do! What's the story?
