Somerset Birth Records
« on: Sunday 16 August 20 07:46 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I'm new to this forum so apologies if I am posting in the wrong place.

I have been researching my family tree on and off for several years now and am trying to fill in a few gaps. I have ancestors from Wells and have been unable to find birth records for some from the early 1800s, though there are baptism records. Is this normal or are they missing for some reason?

I am particularly looking at Abraham Bartlett b. 1808 in Wells (parents Cornelius Bartlett and Charlotte Brooks), and his wife Grace Fry b. 1811, baptised 23rd April, in Glastonbury (parents John Fry and Sophia Ashley). I am a full member of ancestry.co.uk so have gleaned all that I can from there. I would appreciate further advice on where to look!

Thank you.

When you get that far back (pre 1837) then a baptism record is the birth record.  No certificates.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

You may find some useful pointers on searching pre 1837 in England and Wales in the RootsChat Reference Library or in the topics which are listed at the top of the Family History Beginners board.  Topics on both pre and post 1837 are included there.

Basically, civil registration for births marriages and deaths only commenced on 1 July 1837  and even then registration of births could be patchy since there was no penalty for not registering a birth until decades later.

If there is any specific help you may need, do ask  and someone will try to help.

Nell

I couldn't locate anything for the baptism of Abraham on Freereg. There were no birth registrations at that time. These commenced in 1837.

Genuki has a page on Wells:

You may find the Somerset and Dorset Family History Society can assist you.

FindMyPast has a baptism at St Cuthbert's, Wells, on 26 July 1807 , for an Abraham Bartlett, but his parents were Abraham and Rebecca-who were married there on 15 May 1788.

I can not see a baptism for Abraham s/o Cornelius and Charlotte.

Hi all, thanks so much for the info. It's good to know there are no birth records early on so I don't waste more time looking! I will look at all the links you've shared, and no doubt will be posting more in the future.
