Sandra thank you for all your replies. They fill in some of the gaps. On the probate estate records for Mary Irene Cox under the remarks column the name Victor Gwilliam is there next to what appears to be S/S  and the name Frank McLaughlin next to P/S. Do you know what S/S and P/S might stand for? At the moment the UK arrival is just adding to my confusion.

Regarding the UK arrival - I removed one of the middle names for D V as this belonged to the person listed underneath. Apologises, my mistake.

Mary Irene Cox was marked as widowed on the probate record.   Couldn't find a death record for Victor.

I don't know what those abbreviations mean, could Mary have been married twice ?
Perhaps someone will come along with the answer.

Mary Irene Cox, nee Joyce (from headstone) was b 9/3/1900 in Melbourne Australia. Her father was John Marshall Joyce who d in South Africa on 9/12/1924. Listed on the probate record is Mary Irene McLaughlin (born Joyce). Presumably this means at that time she was married to Frank McLaughlin and by 3/6/1934 was married to Victor Gwilliam Cox when their son was born. This still leaves the question of what happened to Victor Gwilliam. I have identified the sons marriage will research that  a little more but that is not for Rootschat as both potentially living.
