1861?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M71B-6G3

William is actually still in the Workhouse 1901 on the census.  Haven’t found Elizabeth yet.

That's Ellen Eliza mmn Hoskins in 1861, I don't think she's the one. That George Purkiss is too old to be the one in the workhouse.
I think the Ellen I'm looking for is the illegitimate one

Is this one of them marrying?

Marriages Mar 1887   (>99%)
LOTT    Kate        Southampton    2c   24
Othen    William        Southampton    2c   24
PURKISS    Ellen        Southampton    2c   24
RICHMOND    Alfred Edward        Southampton    2c   24

I think William Othen is the groom in question
There is another William Othen who marries an Edith about the same time who is interfering with trying to figure them out

Looks like the illegitimate Ellen reg in New Forest District died a few months after birth, so Ellen Eliza is now the only candidate.

I have a DNA match to a granddaughter of Elizabeth and Valentine. I have no Olfords in my tree, but I have Purkiss's who I haven't researched much yet. So that is where I'm expecting the connection to be.

Ellen Eliza's father George was son of William according to marriage record and married Harriet Hoskins on 18 jul 1847 at Southampton. He was baptised on 9 Nov 1823 at Southampton s/o William and Sarah.

I've just found Valentine Olford in 1911. He and his younger sister are with their mother Lavinia and stepfather James William Purkiss.
James Purkiss bac s/o George (dec'd) married Lavinia Olford wid d/o Arthur Burden artist on 2 Jun 1906 at St Stephens Portsmouth. wit Charles Thomas Purkiss and Mabel Styles. Both were resident at 37 Stirling Street Portsmouth.

James William fits with Ellen's brother, and their father was George. So Valentine married his stepfather's sister's daughter - step cousin if there is such a thing. Charles Thomas is another brother and probably Mabel Styles connected to the earlier Elsie Styles.

Now I need to find who George Purkiss was....

I have found him in 1841 pre-marriage with assumed parents William and Sarah, so that fits the baptism I had as a possibility. There is a marriage of a William Purkiss to Sarah Tiller in Southampton on 27 jun 1821.
William is on 1851, born Eling abt 1789.

Well, isn’t that tidy!  How fortunate  :)

Mabel and Elsie appear to be half sisters - different mother's maiden names (Jones & Burder)  and Frederick has different wives in 1891 & 1901 (Elizabeth and Clara)

Clara Styles' maiden name is Burden not Burder - turns out she's Lavinia;s sister, and Elsie the witness is his cousin
