Emma Elizabeth BLAND - looking for birth details in Bedforshire 1847
« on: Tuesday 18 August 20 06:49 BST (UK) »
I am curious to find birth records for the following:

Emma Elizabeth BLAND
Born Luton, 2 December 1847 (TBC)
Mother: Emma Bland (1830-1866)
Father: Unknown

Emma (mother) married George Toyer in 1853 (Saint Mary,Luton) and the family emigrated to Australia in 1855.

I have information about her later life, but I'd really like to find out about the child's parentage. In the 1851 census I have an Emma Bland living as a lodger in Luton, and a young girl the correct age living with a family named Anderson. I just can't make out the wording on her entry - does it say "son's child" or is it something else?

I'm wondering if she was baptised in Luton. Does anyone have access to parish records for Luton? A clue is that Emma was listed as a Baptist on the passenger list on arrival in Sydney.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Rosie99. That's the one I found, but I'm not sure that's an accurate transcription. I'm pretty sure it doesn't say NURSE/NURS, and I'm inclined to believe it says SONS CHILD.

I'd appreciate your opinion.

This is probably the birth registration
BLAND, ELIZABETH       (No mothers maiden surname on index)-
GRO Reference: 1847  Dec Quarter in LUTON  Volume 06  Page 100

I think that the 1851 entry has 'Nurs' child

Westby, in reading through your post I noticed that Emma married George Toyer and went to Australia. Does the name Eric Horace E Toyer (1899-1966) feature in your tree as he married a member of my Hood clan Elizabeth Harriet Hood (1902-1987).

Hi John

Yes Eric Horace was George Toyer's grandson. Happy to help out if you need any help with records in Australia.

Hi
I agree with Rosie = "Nurs Child".

You have only to look 2 rows up for how "Son" is formed

I have not come across that term before, but I can see it now.  Thanks all.

Looks like Emma "fostered" her illegitimate child while she lodged with another family and worked in a factory nearby.  Difficult times for unmarried mothers! It guess it's good that she kept the child who left with the couple and their first child when they moved to Australia.  Emma always kept her birth surname.
