So, from what I'm reading here we don't know who exactly James Cornthwaite was (other than he was a miner) - he wasn't the one who  married Emily Ellis (son of George Cornthwaite and Sarah Coward) who appears to have had 2 children with Emily - Harold 1901 and Marie 1907 - and appears to have died 1908 (age slightly out) as Emily a widow with the children in 1911.

You need the 1915 marriage certificate of James and Emma Roberts to establish who his father was.

Frederick Smith married Emma Cornthwaite 1924 registered at Bolton.

GRO Index

Joseph Leonard Cornthwaite 1911 mmn Roberts reg Bolton
May 1914  ditto  died 1916 age 1
Martha Ann 1916    ditto

ADDED
There is a Frank Cornthwaite registered Bolton 1919 with mothers maiden name Roberts, but to know for sure its Emma Roberts you will need a birth certificate

Where has birth of Joseph Leonard Cornthwaite 1911 come from please?   No such listing on GRO index, Ancestry or FindmyPast???

I couldn't find any evidence of joseph Frederick Cornthwaite either Annette but put it down to my inexperience is searching other sites. I looked on South Africa forum too as none of the family have been found in 1911 UK..

Have had a reply from the dna match

They are going to check some information but confirmed that no father is named on Frank Cornthwaites birth cert

And that there was a connection to South Africa.

There is a list of lancashire births
Www.lan_opc.org

I couldnt find an easy way to get to right date but scrolled thru 1898 _1911
For St john the baptist Atherton

Found a gem :

29 oct baptism of Dorcas Cornthwaite ROBERTS
Base born child of Emma ROBERTS

Born ,10 oct 1902

Address 1 Bag Lane

So its definitely my Emma and Dorcas fathers surname  is identified  as Cornthwaite by her middle name

On lan-opc if you go into ‘home’ then select Atherton. You can then select the church you want and there is a surname index plus year if you wish

Thanks Ann
Ive now gone through all the county records for Cornthwaite( looking outside Atherton too)...but I suppose I could also try different spellings

Dorcas known as Dora Cornthwaite was married at st georges road congregational church
Father james gold miner
Witnesses Tom Scase & leah Pomfret

Martha Ann Cornthwaite b 15 April 1916 was baptised 1922 father james listed as coal hewer

Not found the 1915 bolton wedding  for emma Roberts and James Cornthwaite. So I.ll send off for it
Theres no evidence of any earlier Cornthwaite Robers weddings
Quite a mystery why the couple waited so long

The vicar at the 1907 baptisms was W Nuttall not the same as vicar who baptised Dorcas in 1902

Havent found a baptism for Frank waiting to hear more from his descendant

As there is a connection to mining and Atherton, have you seen the list of deaths in mining accidents on the Atherton pages of LANOPC? www.lan-opc.org.uk/Atherton/index.html Select Industry tab. Had a quick look at the index to mining deaths. No Cornthwaite but there are some Roberts.
Atherton pages have other information sources e.g. register of electors from 19th century.
Lancashire Online Parish Clerks website isn't confined to church registers.  :)
