The Roberts family moved from Mold to Atherton around 1886 based on childrens births

At least 3 ,sons were coalminers by 1901 Thomas ROBERTS their father was no longer mining but a
 sawyer  labourer .

I hope they aren't on accident list but will check it out

Before I check accident list I was just checking the 1891 ,& 1901 census
-& ,realise several of the ROBERTS daughters also worked at pit or married miners

1891 Harriet rebekha age ,20 was a colleiry worker
As was martha ann age 17
Edwin+ ,john s were mining coal age 20 & 13

In 1901 ,,martha was still coal picker age 27 so was Emma age 18

In 1911 martha age 37 & ,Elizabeth age ,18 were coal screeners
At pit brow where brother Benjamin,22 ,was a hewer

Amelia married a collier Joseph Eden
In 1908 they lived at 9 George street so presumably thats who Emma and james cornthwaite stayed with on return from south Africa

Pam on south Africa forum very helpfully posted some research links

REFERENCE MM4205/14  PART 1  DESCRIPTION  J CORNTHWAITE COMPLAINT REGARDING NON-RECEIPT OF HIS REMITTANCE FROM MINERS' PHTHISIS BOARD
STARTING  1914  ENDING    1914

,& if this is the correct J.Cornthwaite it could be a reason that the couple decided to legalise their union
For Emma & children to be entitled to any compensation .he was claimimg for his lung disease .

Majority of fatalities would have been underground. Women and girls were forbidden to work underground by the Mines and Collieries Act 1842. Records of local fatal mining accidents on LAN-OPC begin in 1850s. Appointment of Mining Inspectors and required recording of details of fatal mining accidents were then recent introductions.
There were 114 known deaths of female workers at British collieries 1852-1890. Around a third of those deaths were caused by wagons. Source: "The Lancashire Pit Brow Lasses and the campaign to remove women from surface labour 1842-1887" by Angela V. John, North West Labour History Society www.nwlh.org.uk  A third of the total female surface labour force at British collieries worked in West Lancashire. The article describes type of work they did and gives examples of wages in late 19th-century.
Added. Wigan Local History Society has a section Pit Brow Lasses. It has a list of resources including  other published works by Angela John (she wrote a book) and "Female Deaths and Accidents in Wigan and districts 1851-1913". https://www.wiganlocalhistory.org/pit-brow-lasses

Photos of female pit brow workers on National Archives website; one a studio portrait, the other an on-site scene showing them working.

Thanks ...maidenstone

I will probably go through these records again ..there are a lot more coal miners among our descendants than I would imagine
The occasional lead miner and gold miner too.
