There is a baptism of a John brotherton 30 July 1826 mother Margaret in Houghton by Settle. No father named. Long Preston is a neighbouring parish.

Thank you.

Very interesting. It seems to fit. From an old map Houghton seems to be Tosside. Still quite a way from Long Preston but that must have depended on the church which was Anglican. St Mary's in Clitheroe would have been nearer.

I can only think that for some reason either Margaret was working in Long Preston or, worst case scenario, they are not my family after all.

I didn't have a baptism for Margaret either. However, I have literally just found a baptism which reads:

17 May 1789 Margaret spurious daughter of widow Brotherton - Christ Church, Over Wyresdale - Margaret's 1861 place of birth (Wearsdale).

It is not looking good. I now have to delve further into Over Wyresdale. The outcome seems to be John and Margaret may not be part of my family tree after all. Somewhere along the line they could be connected much further back.

Thanks again for your help.

Edit

I have now found more Brotherton's in Wyresdale. Not a million miles away from my roots but worthy of investigation at some point.

There could have been a mother & baby home or a suitable relative in the area which Margaret was sent to. As you probably know she was robert’s 2nd wife.

Hi. Thank you.

I've resigned myself to the fact John is not a close link to my family. One of those flukes where, even though the other Brothertons I have pretty much accounted for, he is probably a distant connection that I have yet to figure out why he ended up in Colne. Being born roughly near Lancaster they weren't a million miles away from the roots of my families.

Kind regards
Amanda
